A Hamlet Built Around a Mill
Water Mill is a hamlet in the Town of Southampton, and it takes its name from the mill Edward Howell was granted land to build in 1644 so settlers could grind grain into meal. The water-powered mill on Old Mill Road now houses the Water Mill Museum and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. An old windmill stands on the town green, so the hamlet keeps both kinds of mill. Since 2012 Water Mill has also been home to the Parrish Art Museum, which relocated here from Southampton.
